Advisor & Advisee Roles

Wondering what to expect from your academic advisor and what your advisor will expect of you?

The advising relationship is most successful when the effort from advisor and advisee is 50/50.

Advisor (50%)

  • Understand your goals.
  • Listen to your questions.
  • Educate you about academics.
  • Direct you to other resources.

Student Advisee (50%)

  • Share your goals.
  • Ask questions.
  • Learn about academic policies.
  • Plan your academic program.
  • Access campus resources.

As the University Advising Office’s website states, “no single advisor has expertise in all of the areas a student may wish to explore,” which means that making connections around campus with faculty, staff, and student mentors will be important for gathering information, accessing support, and even asking for letters of recommendation. Learn more about the advisor's role at UConn.
